Maths
through Spreadsheets
Problems, puzzles
and investigations covering a very wide range of mathematics
Maths through
Spreadsheets consists of three collections of problems, puzzles
and activities to help you use spreadsheets as a medium for investigating
mathematics. There will be something useful in these books
for any mathematics teacher who is considering using a spreadsheet in
their lessons.
Student's Book 1
is written especially for those with little or no experience of spreadsheets.
Book 2 is appropriate for those who are fairly confident about the basics
of spreadsheets. The books are extremely "user-friendly".
Book
1
(for Key Stages 2, 3 and 4) has an accompanying disk of files (for both
Excel and Sparks) in the Teacher's Pack. The students start by simply
entering numbers into cells to solve arithmetic problems. Then they
progress through number puzzles, mystery functions, sequences and many
other activities to simple modelling. Even though there are over 60
activities in Book 1, students never need to do more than enter numbers
into cells.
Book 2
(for Key Stages 3 and 4) contains 100 problems, investigations and puzzles
for students individually and in small groups in Number, Algebra, Modelling
and Handling data. These are all designed to be particularly suitable
for tackling with a spreadsheet. The accompanying disk contains files
with partial solutions and hints to help students in difficulty.
The Guide
to each book gives hints and (where appropriate) solutions to the exercises
in all 3 books. The Teacher's Pack contains 1 copy of the relevant
Student's Book, plus the Guide to the Book and a disk of spreadsheet
files, together with an Overview of using Spreadsheets in the Mathematics
classroom.
